Join the movement to break down stigma surrounding mental health and suicide.
Calling all our mates in the construction industry and other friends and supporters!
If there was ever a time for us to come together for some good times, laughter, and love, it’s now! The 11th annual Walk for Awareness is happening in Brisbane on 10 October 2021. The physical event in Brisbane is going to be smaller and socially distanced this year (entry limits apply), but a virtual walk has also been created so you can walk wherever you want.
MATES in Construction is humbled to yet again be one of several beneficiary charities for this year’s walk. Every dollar counts toward helping MATES do the job of suicide prevention in our industry and will also help benefit several other worthy charities.
Walk for Awareness is the signature annual event of the Mental Awareness Foundation (MAF), established by brothers Tudor and Wesley Vasile who earlier lost two dear friends to suicide in close succession.
MATES looks at this as a terrific opportunity for our whole industry to unite in a friendly and safe environment where issues of mental health can be discussed openly with friends, family and supportive strangers. We believe the matters surrounding suicide should be discussed, not hidden. Fundamentally, Walk for Awareness is a celebration of life! We will have our own team and stall at Walk for Awareness, please join us.
The physical event is a 9km circular walk commencing from, and finishing at, Captain Burke Park beneath the Storey Bridge, Kangaroo Point. A half-distance 4.5 circuit is also available. The event concludes with a festival at Captain Burke Park, featuring Walk for Awareness ambassador and Country Western singer, Jade Holland! Hailing from Hervey Bay, Queensland, Jade is a household name among the tens of millions of Country Western fans in the United States! Ahead of the walk, the morning will be livestreamed to the nation, beginning with an inspiring opening ceremony, where we remember those lost to depression and mental illness and honour those continuing the battle.
The Mental Awareness Foundation also encourages people to participate in this event anywhere in Australia and take on the walk in your area. Where possible, include some iconic local areas and share photos with the rest of the Walk for Awareness community, showing the amazing impact you’ve just made in the quest to raise awareness of depression and mental illness.
