The MATES Program

Training and support

MATES in Construction is a suicide prevention charity aimed at reducing the high rate of suicide in our industry.

On average, we lose 200 workers a year to suicide—someone’s workmate, friend, or family member. Workers are 8x more likely to die by suicide than an accident. For over 15 years, MATES has focused on:

  • Building a volunteer network to spot and support struggling workers.
  • Providing training to develop essential skills.
  • Enhancing help-offering skills within the industry.
  • Offering 24/7 Helpline and Case Management Support for workers and their families.

Ways to get MATES onsite

To get MATES Onsite, speak with your local Field Officer or call 1300 642 111 between 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, to arrange a visit.
Book Training

The MATES Respond Program focuses on three main elements to provide the volunteers with the skills to guide a site through an event.

Connecting with the event

Facilitate understanding and emotional connection to help workers process the incident.

Understanding the event

Guide workers in making sense of the event and its effects on the site.

Assisting workers on site

Offer practical and emotional support to ensure workers feel safe and cared for.
